By now, superheroes are kind of ubiquitous in geek culture. We have the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the upcoming DC Comics (likely) trainwreck of a cinematic universe, and the myriad of TV shows like Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Arrow, and The Flash. We have animated shows, video games, and more merch than we know what to do with.

And so it feels like kind of a cliche to have a superhero-themed #FitGeekFriday. But you know what? Superheroes are awesome. We all want to be a superhero of some kind. That’s kind of the goal most of us have had since we were kids. Goodness knows I wanted to be Batman when I was a kid–and I guess I still kind of do. Well, except for the dead parents and all that emotional baggage.

What is it about superheroes that attracts us? What is it that makes us want to workout to look like one? Why would we want to be Tony Stark or Thor?

For me, it’s the epic scale. I love stuff that’s larger than life, but still relateable. I love stuff that takes the mundane an ordinary and combines it with the magnificent. I love science-teacher Peter Parker. I like Dick Grayson when he’s working as a cop. I love Babs as Oracle more than Batgirl! I can relate to these everyday people who happen to do good in their world in ways that only they can.

For me, that’s what being a superhero is–using your gifts to make the world a better place. If that gift is being able to fly and beat up baddies, then great. If it’s the ability to start a non-profit, then good for you. And if it’s the ability to motivate yourself and the people around you to be healthier, then you’re a superhero, too, in my book.
