Austin Kleon said that the key to success as an artist was stealing. Really! He wrote a book called Steal Like an Artist, for goodness sake! So, I’m following his advice and straight-up stealing Side Quest Fitness‘s Friday High Five emails. Every Friday, I get 5 cool things Robbie has done, seen, or cared about that week. I legit look forward to it. It’s really similar to what Void and I do with our Weekly Geekery segment on Geek to Geek–which has spurred our community members to make their own weekly thread to discuss this stuff.
And a couple years back back, I had a feature here called #FitGeekFriday. It was pretty cool, I thought, and I’ve kind of missed doing it. So guess what? I’m combining all these ideas together, by reviving #FitGeekFriday into a fitnessy, mindful, hodge-podge of cool stuff I’ve found.
The Kindness Diaries on Netflix
I watch a ton of documentaries, and I really love watching docs about happiness, mindfulness, and enlightening topics. When I ran across The Kindness Diaries this week, I was hooked from the first episode. It’s about a dude who goes around with no money, sees what people help provide for him, and then gives back and pays it forward to the people who were kind enough to open their lives to him.
It’s a really interesting concept, and it’s really similar to a movie I watched a while back called Craigslist Joe. With The Kindness Diaries, though, I am not sure how candid it is because there is obviously a camera crew (or at least a single camera person), so it makes me wonder how staged it is (because all reality TV is staged to one extent or another).
Either way, it’s about being nice to people, and I am on board with that.
Yoga with Adriene
I don’t think I mentioned this on the Geek to Geek episode we just did about YouTube, but I wanted to let y’all know about it. My wife and I really do love yoga, and a few nights a week, we throw on one of Adriene’s videos and get our stretch on. She is the only channel we subscribe to for yoga, honestly, and after we found her, we cancelled our DailyBurn subscription because, frankly, her videos are better than what’s offered there.
She’s super pro, super nice, and not overly New Age-y about the whole thing. So yeah, check her videos out.
@Chocobochica’s Final Fantasy tattoo
When I saw this Tweet, I was blown away. I don’t have any tattoos, myself, mainly because I’m a fickle person who changes what I like every couple of seconds, but when I saw this finished product, I was totally envious and totally aware I will never be cool enough to have anything even remotely like it on my body.
So bask in the awesome and make sure you notice the signature by Nobuo Uematsu, who signed her arm in the spot she wanted the tattoo, and then she had it inked in permanently as a part of the sleeve. #awesome
Running. Sweet, sweet running.
And very quickly: I started running again. Y’all have been keeping me accountable on Twitter, and I have been getting out there again. So thank you. I have a local 5k race my niece wants me to run with her 2 weeks, and since I build up endurance very quickly, I see no reason why I can’t hit about the 30-minute mark for 3.1 miles by March 4.
I’ll keep you posted. And I know I’ve been slacking on the post-run selfies, so I’ll make sure I get my camera out more often so you can see my sweaty mug as proof your encouragement is working.
So what about you?
What have you been geeking out about this week? Did anything catch your attention that you want to share? Let us know in the comments or throw it on Twitter or Instagram with #FitGeekFriday and be sure to tag @geekfitnesscast!
Y’all are awesome! Stay shiny, fitgeeks!
